MeT Predicts Snowfall in Kashmir
Kashmir Valley remains in the grip of a relentless cold wave, with Pahalgam registering a bone-chilling low of minus 6.6°C on Wednesday. The freezing temperatures have not only persisted but also led to moderate fog, causing visibility challenges for commuters in the plains of Jammu, according to a meteorological department official.
Srinagar experienced a low of minus 4.8°C, mirroring the previous night’s temperature, and standing 2.7°C below the seasonal norm for this period. Qazigund, another town in the valley, reported a minimum of minus 4.6°C, slightly lower than the previous night, and 1.8°C below the usual temperature for this gateway town.
Pahalgam, the renowned resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.6°C, maintaining its normalcy for this time of the year. Meanwhile, Kokernag, also in the south, recorded a minimum of minus 3.2°C, slightly above normal by 0.3°C.
In the northern part of the valley, Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 5.3°C, indicating a drop of 2.8°C from the previous night. The famous skiing resort, Gulmarg, reported a low of minus 3.8°C, showing a deviation of 3.2°C above normal.
Jammu, the winter capital, recorded a minimum of 7.0°C, slightly below the previous night, and 0.3°C below the expected temperature for this season. Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah reported lows of 1.6°C, 2.6°C, and 0.3°C, respectively.
As Kashmir valley remains in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh winter period, the weather forecast indicates mainly dry conditions until January 3.
The subsequent days may bring generally cloudy weather with the possibility of very light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches on January 4-5.
From January 6-7, mainly dry weather is anticipated, with no significant weather activity expected till January 7.
Looking ahead, the weatherman has issued a warning for moderate to dense fog and cold day conditions over the plains of Jammu in the next two days.
Additionally, generally cloudy weather with the chance of light rain/snow over isolated higher reaches is expected on January 8. The forecast for January 9-10 suggests generally dry weather.
